All praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. I, Dr. Khoirul Rista, am grateful to once again receive a research grantโthis time from the Central Board of Aisyiyah Higher Education (PP Dikti Aisyiyah). The project I proposed explores the potential of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) as an oral formulation for acne treatment. In this study, the extract will be administered to rats through the oral gavage method (sonde).
The research will focus on two key parameters: the acne lesion score and histopathological analysis. By observing both the visible improvement of acne-like lesions and the microscopic changes in skin tissue, the study aims to provide scientific evidence on the efficacy of kratom as a natural anti-acne therapy.
This initiative is not only expected to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on Mitragyna speciosa, but also to open new pathways in developing plant-based oral formulations that could complement or even substitute conventional acne treatments.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Iโm delighted to share that together with my team, I, Dr. Khoirul Rista, have been awarded research grants from Kemdiktisaintek for the 2024/2025 period. In May 2025, our project on the use of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) formulated into a topical cream as an anti-acne agentโtested on P. acnes-induced rat modelsโsuccessfully secured funding.
Just two months later, in July 2025, another exciting milestone followed. As the supervisor of the Student Creativity Program (PKM), I guided a group of students from the DIV Medical Laboratory Technology program at Politeknik Aisyiyah Pontianak. Together, we won a PKM grant from Belmawa Kemdiktisaintek. Our proposal focused on exploring Mitragyna speciosa as an antipsoriasis agent in an Imiquimod-induced rat model.
Both research projects are now in progress, with a strong commitment to publish the outcomes in nationally accredited journals. This achievement not only highlights the potential of natural products in medical science but also represents a step forward for our institution in fostering impactful research and innovation.
Alhamdululillah, I, Dr. Khoirul RA, together with the research team from Politeknik Aisyiyah Pontianak, am delighted to announce that we have been selected as recipients of the DIKTI research grant for the 2024/2025 period. Our approved project is titled:
โUtilization of Uncaria gambir Cream as Anti-Psoriasisโ
This grant will support our teamโs efforts to develop and validate a topical cream formulation based on Uncaria gambir (commonly known as gambir) with the aim of exploring its therapeutic potential for the management of psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes, immune dysregulation, and oxidative stress. Conventional treatments, while effective, often carry risks of side effects and long-term complications. Natural compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties are increasingly explored as adjunctive or alternative therapies.
Uncaria gambir has drawn scientific interest due to its high content of catechins, flavonoids, and other polyphenols, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in various studies. However, the exploration of Uncaria gambir in dermatological applicationsโparticularly as a cream for psoriasisโremains underdeveloped. Our research intends to bridge this gap by formulating a stable cream and systematically testing its efficacy and safety in relevant in vitro, ex vivo, and possibly in vivo models.

We anticipate that our study will provide new scientific evidence for a novel, plant-based topical therapy for psoriasis, possibly leading to further developments in formulation, clinical trials, and eventual commercialization.

Modulating the nucleotide cycle signaling of phosphodiesterases (PDEs) can facilitate thermogenesis. When it comes to obesity therapy, utilizing herbs as part of non-pharmacological treatment methods is highly recommended due to the lower risks involved compared to pharmacological methods. Bajakah root, a typical plant found in West Kalimantan, also known by its Latin name, Spatholobus littoralis Hassk (S. littoralis Hassk), is currently being extensively researched. Isorhynchophylline and rhynchophylline are common alkaloids found in S. littoralis Hassk. The objective of this study was to explore the potential of these two alkaloids through an in silico approach. Chem3D Pro software was used to prepare ligands with energy conformations for accurate docking results via AutoDock Vina software. The visualization was carried out in Biovia Discovery Studio. The lowest binding energy values were obtained for the PDE4C isoform, with values of -9.14, -7.61, and -5.61 kcal/mol, respectively. The interaction between isorhynchophylline and PDE4C had the lowest binding energy. In silico studies suggest that two alkaloid components, isorhynchophylline and rhynchophylline, found in S. littoralis Hassk have the potential to increase lipolysis activity.
